According to data trackers, this year’s hottest video game accessories belong to the toys-to-life department, which has spawned favorites, such as Skylanders Trap Team and Disney Infinity 2.0. Last year, Nintendo’s Amiibo line also demonstrated impressive sales and revenue. And, very soon, another heavy hitter in the video game world will join in the action. Interestingly, these accessories are not only a hit amongst the kids, but adults also like to collect them. Below you learn a little bit about toys-to-life, and the newest kid to hit the block:
What are Toys-to-Life?
If you have a youth who plays video games, you might already be familiar with Skylanders or Disney Infinity. They’re probably yearning to add new figurines to their collection, which include Disney, Pixar, DC Comics and Marvel Comic characters.
Toys-to-life video games use specialized devices that attach to the gaming system, and transport the characteristics, special powers, and personalities synchronized with the character figurines when placed on the device, sometimes referred to as a ‘portal.’ These collectible figurines then become a playable character within their respective games.
The two most popular video game franchises utilizing the toy-to-life model are:
Skylanders: Debuting in 2011, the Skylanders franchise is an action-adventure, role-playing game with four installments altogether. The first, Skylanders: Spyro’s Adventure, introduces players to the escapades of fantasy-like creatures with special powers. Skylanders Giants and Skylanders Swap Force, and Trap Team followed. In September 2015, we can expect the release of Skylanders: SuperChargers, which is sure to make the Christmas lists of fans.
Disney Infinity: The Starter Pack figurines for Disney Infinity (released in 2013) featured the likes of Captain Jack Sparrow, Mr. Incredible, and James P. Sullivan “Sulley”, which were compatible with various figures and playsets. Additional accessories are sold separately as single figurines or in special packs, such as Cars, the Lone Ranger, Tangled, Frozen, and Wreck-It-Ralph. Disney Infinity: Marvel Super Heroes was the second installment with a starter pack that contained figures of Iron Man, Thor, and Black Widow. Disney Infinity 3.0 is slated for a 2015 release, and will feature characters from the Star Wars universe and Iron Man Hulkbuster.
Introducing LEGO Dimensions
Slated for release in September 2015, LEGO Dimensions is the first time gamers will be able to play with a variety of their favorite characters in the same adventure – all hailing from different ‘universes’. This active-adventure game will be available for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Wii U, Xbox One, and Xbox 360. Following in the footsteps of Skylanders and Disney Infinity, LEGO Dimensions will incorporate toy figurines that correlate to the actions of the game. Sure to be a hit with LEGO fans, this might turn into one of the hottest toys for this Christmas.
LEGO Dimensions has its own starter pack with additional add-on packs for fun, team, and level set to be released during the launch day, and throughout the rest of the year and into 2016.
The starter pack for LEGO Dimensions will include a:
- Lego Dimensions Video Game
- LEGO Toy Pad
- Bricks to build the LEGO Gateway
- Batman (from DC Comics)
- Gandalf (from the Lord of the Rings)
- Wyldstyle (from the Lego Movie)
You’ll get a chance to collect and/or gift characters that represent the likes of The Simpsons, Doctor Who, Back to the Future, Scooby-Doo, Jurassic World, DC Comics (like Harley Quinn and the Joker), Lord of the Rings, Lego Ninjago, and the Wizard of Oz.
